Maersk completes acquisition of Senator International

Danish integrated container logistics company Maersk completed the acquisition of international freight forwarding, shipping and logistics company, Senator International, which was announced on June 2nd, 2022.

This acquisition, with a value estimated at $644m, aims to ramp up air freight capacity, network, and know-how. Indeed Maersk launched air cargo in April of 2022, while Senator International disposes of a developed airfreight network, including own controlled flights and partnerships with airlines, as well as a full container load (FCL) and less than container load (LCL) networks. Additionally, the company disposes of specialised services such packaging, warehousing and distribution across all continents.

The Coronavirus-19 pandemic, which was declared a pandemic by the World Health Organisation in March of 2021, has led to production issues and widespread congestion that remain problematic two years down the line. Because of this an increased amount of customers are requiring alternative means of cargo transportation.

This acquisition increases Maersk’s ability to provide flexible logistic solutions, and accelerate or slow cargo transportation in line with evolving supply chain needs, as well as increased redundancy.

In future Maersk aims to carry about one third of their annual air tonnage via their own controlled freight network. To achieve this, they will employ both owned and leased aircraft, in addition to strategic commercial carriers and charter flight operators.
