Logistics service provider, Rhenus Group, has expanded its footprint in China, with the focus on providing air and ocean as well as rail services. The company’s new office in Chongqing, its twenty third location in China, will also provide support to vertical markets covering chemical products, automobiles, motorcycle parts, notebook computer parts and equipment.

The office in Chongqing, together with the current office in Chengdu, will extend Greater China’s footprint and provide better local support for businesses operating in West China, the company said.

Settling in a fast-growing city

Having a growing population of over 30 million residents and a strong reputation for its innovation capabilities, Chongqing is among the world’s fastest growing cities and a commercial gem among China’s western regions.

With an established industrial system supported by the electronics, automotive, equipment, chemical engineering, materials, consumer goods, and energy industries, Chongqing has also seen rapid growth based on a strategy of innovation-driven development led by big data intelligence. It achieved a regional GDP of $429.55 billion in 2022, an increase of 2.6 percent over the same period of the previous year.

Strategic projects include the acceleration of the construction of the Chengdu-Chongqing economic circle and the New International Land-Sea Trade Corridor. Through the ILSTC, Chongqing has seen about 148,000 TEU (Twenty-foot Equivalent Units) of cargo delivered to the city through 7,000 rail-sea intermodal trains travelling through the corridor in 2022.

“Rhenus is committed to expanding our presence in Greater China as part of our on-going global growth strategy. Chongqing’s strategic location as a transformation hub and international gateway driven by innovation offers us an ideal opportunity to share our experience in multimodal and intelligent logistics with the companies here,” says Cliff Xu, CEO of Rhenus Air & Ocean Greater China.
