JV in the making for offshore wind towers manufacturing in the US
Wid the offshore wind projects development picks up pace in the United States many are looking to grab their stake in it. GRI Renewable Industries and Mitsui have signed a memorandum of understanding to set up a wind tower manufacturing facility in the country.
The two companies agreed to study the opportunity to form a joint venture to invest in an industrial plant to manufacture towers to supply the growing U.S. offshore wind sector, targeting SOP within 2026.
In addition, Nucor Corporation, North America’s largest steel producer and recycler, will serve as a strategic supply chain partner for the joint venture, providing sustainable steel for off-shore wind tower construction, including heavy-gauge steel plates.
This production facility will be located on the East Coast of the United States. Both Mitsui and GRI are already carrying out a detailed analysis of the potential locations for the plant.
According to the United States Energy Information Administration, power plant developers and operators have reported plans to install more than 6 gigawatts (GW) of offshore wind capacity at sites mostly along the U.S. eastern seaboard by 2029.
These additions include projects off the coasts of New Jersey, Maryland, and Virginia, as well as on Lake Erie, near Cleveland, Ohio.
