Russian Rosatom focuses on in-house design of semi-submersible vessels

The Russian nuclear monopoly Rosatom continues working on the design of its own semi-submersible vessel for heavy cargo transportation.

Vladimir Aptekarev, Deputy General Director of Atomenergomash, Rosatom’s machine-building arm, announced such plans for the first time at the end of last year.

These ships are planned to transport floating power units and other superheavy cargo. Due to sanctions, Rosatom is currently unable to build such vessels at the capacities of foreign shipyards, which means that the company currently considers designing its own ship for heavy cargo transportation a priority.

Vladimir Aptekarev comments: “Together with colleagues from Tenex, which is part of Rosatom, we decided that we would implement a project of such a vessel”.

According to him, the partners are currently working on the design for a vessel that will be able to transport Rosatom’s floating power units and “operate for the external market.” This year, the parties intend to complete the project and begin construction of the vessel.

Aptekarev also highlighted the versatility of the vessel, stating that it could transport drilling platforms and vessels of certain sizes through the Northern Sea Route and in open warm waters.

The new ship is expected to be used for transportation of heavy cargo, primarily for the interests of oil and gas companies both from Russia and abroad.
