Sarens lifts Lithuania’s locomotives to European standards
Sarens, a global leader in heavy lifting and specialized transport, has played a key role in advancing Lithuania’s integration into the European railway network. The company completed a critical project at the Šeštokai railway station, a vital junction point where the new European rail standards meet the existing infrastructure.
This project involved meticulously adapting older locomotives to fit the new European track standards. This adaptation is essential for seamless integration with the broader European railway network, a cornerstone of the ambitious Rail Baltica initiative.
Šeštokai’s location makes it a recurring focal point for these crucial lifts, conducted by Sarens every 2-3 months as Lithuania’s railway modernization progresses. The tight timeframe and limited space demanded a strategic approach. Sarens opted for two Terex Demag AC220-5 cranes, specifically chosen for their optimal size and manoeuvrability within the confined railway environment.
“The crane operators did an excellent job working in tandem, which required special care and coordination,” said Artūras Dadurka, Project Manager at Sarens.
The entire operation, encompassing setup and the 90-ton locomotive lift, was completed within a single day, minimizing disruption to the heavily trafficked railway line. This swift execution highlights Sarens’ ability to balance efficiency with meticulous care.
The Rail Baltica project, targeted for completion by 2030, aims to connect the Baltic states and Finland to Western Europe. This ambitious initiative promises to revolutionize regional connectivity and economic growth. By adapting locomotives to the new standards, Lithuania ensures its railway system can fully support this transformative project.
