Orion installs 70th monopile foundation for Coastal Virginia Offshore Wind
DEME’s offshore installation giant, Orion, reached a major milestone at Dominion Energy’s Coastal Virginia Offshore Wind project. The DP3 offshore installation vessel has installed 70 monopile foundations for the project located off the coast of Virginia.
The vessel, staffed with expert DEME employees and skilled local union members, is scheduled to install 176 monopile foundations, weighing about 1,500 tonnes each. The loadouts are taking place at the Portsmouth Marine Terminal, a deepwater facility in Virginia upgraded to handle offshore wind projects.
Furthermore, DEME will also install three offshore substations, scour protection and the supply and installation of both export and inter-array cables in consortium with Prysmian. The company has already ticked off another box as the cable installation vessel Living Stone laid the first export cable for the project.
Once completed, Coastal Virginia Offshore Wind will bring clean energy to up to 660,000 households in the Commonwealth of Virginia while avoiding as much as 5 million tons of carbon dioxide emissions annually.
