Kalmar, a Cargotec company, has signed a deal with Rotterdam Shortsea Terminals (RST) to provide six hybrid straddle carriers. The machines are expected to be shipped during the second quarter of 2024.

Kalmar has played a crucial role in RST’s recent expansion. RST is Europe’s largest shortsea shipping hub handling over 50 vessels every week. The new hybrid straddle carriers are part of a fleet upgrading initiative aimed at enhancing the terminal’s environmental performance. The order also includes Kalmar Insight coverage for all six machines, which is a performance management tool that turns data into actionable insights.

Arno Storm, CEO of RST, stated, “As a long-term partner and eco-efficiency leader, Kalmar was the natural choice to support us with this fleet renewal. We are constantly striving to improve our environmental performance, and hybrid machines are a concrete step forward in line with our corporate social responsibility (CSR) goals. We are looking forward to welcoming the new machines to our fleet next year.”

Ron Robinson, Sales Director, Horizontal Transportation for Kalmar, added, “Kalmar and RST have enjoyed a highly successful relationship over many years of collaboration. We are thrilled to support them in their transition to more eco-efficient cargo-handling operations with our hybrid straddle carrier solution, which can cut fuel consumption by up to 40 per cent compared to equivalent diesel-powered machines.”
