Port Houston has taken a significant stride towards its environmental goals with the arrival of six new hybrid-electric rubber-tired gantry (RTG) cranes. This latest acquisition brings the total number of new RTGs deployed across the port’s Barbours Cut and Bayport Container Terminals to 26 since December 2023.

The state-of-the-art cranes mark the fourth of five deliveries expected this year, underlining Port Houston’s commitment to both environmental sustainability and operational efficiency.

This investment in hybrid technology represents a crucial step towards achieving Port Houston’s ambitious target of carbon neutrality by 2050. Compared to traditional diesel-powered cranes, the hybrid models boast a 90% reduction in emissions of nitrogen oxides (NOx), particulate matter (PM), hydrocarbons (HC), and carbon monoxide (CO). Additionally, the cranes offer significant reductions in noise pollution and fuel consumption.

“This investment demonstrates our commitment to sustainable growth and our leadership in the maritime industry’s shift toward greener equipment,” said Roger Guenther, Executive Director at Port Houston. “As we integrate advanced technology into our operations alongside our dedicated staff, stevedores, and ILA labor, we are not only improving efficiency but also contributing to a healthier environment for our community.”

An additional batch of RTGs is expected to arrive by the fourth quarter of this year. By the end of this year, 57 of the port’s total 147 RTG cranes across both container terminals will be hybrid-electric.
