Wallenius Wilhelmsen, a global leader in roll-on/roll-off (RoRo) shipping, has exercised options to build four additional 9,300 car equivalent unit (CEU) vessels at China Merchants Jinling Shipyard Co., Ltd.

These options were secured on March 25, 2024, and offer earlier delivery slots compared to previously announced vessel orders.

Expanding fleet with environmentally friendly design

With this latest order, Wallenius Wilhelmsen’s firm contracts for new vessels now total twelve. Deliveries are scheduled to begin in mid-2026, with the four vessels exercised today slated for delivery in late 2027 or early 2028.

All twelve vessels will be equipped for methanol dual-fuel operation, offering a significant reduction in greenhouse gas emissions compared to traditional marine fuels. They will also be ammonia-ready, allowing for future conversion as infrastructure for this clean-burning alternative becomes available, according to Wallenius Wilhelmsen.

Wallenius pushing sustainability

This expansion strengthens Wallenius Wilhelmsen’s commitment to fleet modernization and environmental sustainability. The new vessels, classified as part of the company’s next-generation Shaper Class, are designed for enhanced operational efficiency and cargo handling capabilities.

The company retains options for an additional four vessels, providing flexibility for future fleet growth based on market demands.
