Jan De Nul Group instals foundations and cables for Formosa 2 OWF

The Dutch Jan De Nul (JDN) Group finished installing 47 jacket foundations and 188 pin piles, the 4 export and 47 inter array cables on the Formosa 2 Offshore Wind Farm. Located in Taiwan, located between four and ten nautical miles off Miaoli County, this 376 MW OWF will will provide clean wind energy to about 380,000 households per year, once completed.

Peter De Pooter, Manager Offshore Renewables for Jan De Nul Group, stated: “Our recent EPCI projects demonstrate our multidisciplinary approach and ability to assist our clients in their ambition to execute ever larger and more complex projects. It is our aim to involve local suppliers as much as possible in the execution of all our current and future projects in Taiwan.”

188 Pin Piles

The 188 pin piles, weighing up to 270 tonnes, and measuring up to 79 metres, were manufactured by the South Korean company, EEW KHPC, in South-Korea and Malaysia. They were then shipped to the marshalling harbour in Taichung in 2020, before being installed by the Heavy Lift Vessel Seaway Yudin in water depths up to 55 metres. The final one was installed on 22 August. During installation, JDN complied with environmental restrictions.

47 Jacket Foundations

The 47 jacket foundations each weigh 1,600 tonnes, and stand 91 metres tall, which is about the height of a 30-floor building. Manufactured by Sembcorp Marine and Saipem Fabrication in Indonesia, from 2020 on, they were shipped to Taiwan between October 2021 and July 2022, by three heavy transport vessels. Installation by the Heavy Lift Vessel Bokalift 1 then took place, between April and August 2022.

4 Export and 47 Inter-array Cables

In 2020, the chinese company, LS Cable, manufactured the 34.5 km of export cables and 87 km of inter-array cables required for the project. They were then installed by the JDN Cable-Laying Vessel Willem de Vlamingh in 2021, and a Multipurpose Vessel Connector in 2022. The cables were buried with the aid of the JDN’sTrailing Suction Hopper Dredger Niña and Francis Beaufort. The four export cables were joined onshore with the land cables at the transition joint bays in 2021, while the 47 inter-array cables were installed between May and September 2022. The cable terminations and the remaining cable burials and stabilizations will be finalised in the coming weeks, with the help of an Offshore Support Vessel Orient Constructor from a local partner, DFO, and JDN’s Offshore Support Vessel Grand Canyon 2.
