Bolloré launched its first Renewable Natural Gas (RNG) truck, to strengthen its “sustainable logistics” initiative. Following the launch that took place at their Coppell, Texas facility in July 2022, two more RNG trucks were received in August, with a fourth expected early in 2023.

Bolloré partnered with the Gulf Coast-based company Jetco, which is owned by The GTI Group. Jetco is also a U.S. EPA SmartWay member with environmental commitments. They invested in four Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) trucks from Freightliner which will also be operated in Texas, with Bolloré.

Greenhouse emissions

CNG trucks reduce “Well-to-Wheel” (WTW) greenhouse emissions from 5% to 16% according to various studies. Also, the three trucks received this year will cover about 500,000 miles – or over 80500 kilometres – a year through Texas, saving 10 tons of carbon dioxide a year in comparison to diesel trucks.

Bolloré Logistics is also going one significant step further, by using RNG fuel sources, meaning fuel made from organic waste like livestock manure and landfills. These materials release methane which can be captured, cleaned and transformed into fuel. This prevents methane, a greenhouse gas 25 times stronger than CO2, from being released into the atmosphere. Also, gas releases less nitrogen oxide and particulate matter than diesel.

“Powering Sustainable Logistics”

Through its Corporate social responsibility (CSR) program “Powering Sustainable Logistics”, Bolloré aims to provide sustainable supply chain solutions to customers and is committed to cutting its scope 3 carbon dioxide emissions, which result from activities or assets not owned or controlled by the reporting organisation, but that the organisation indirectly impacts in its value chain. In the case of Bolloré, the focus is on cutting emissions generated by transport by 30% by 2030, compared to 2019.

Darian Smith, Hub Manager for the Coppell facility, stated: “As the need for sustainability continues to grow, having low carbon impact transportation plans becomes more critical for road freight. Bolloré Logistics is actively pushing with its partners to invest in more sustainable trucking solutions. We are very excited about our partnership with Jetco that will enable us to add four RNG trucks to our service offering.”
