First Coastal Virginia Offshore Wind Monopiles reach U.S. soil

The first monopiles for the Dominion Energy Coastal Virginia Offshore Wind project have finally arrived at the Port of Virginia. The Sun Shine heavy load carrier was towed by McAllister Towing to the Portsmouth Marine Terminal docking it ship stern first. 

The vessel departed Rostock at the end of September where it loaded the first eight monopiles at the EEW Special Pipe Constructions facility. In preparation for RoRo loading, the monopiles were lifted into the transport cradle using the Strand Jack system.

In total, EEW SPC will produce 176 monopile foundations that are up to 83 meters long, weigh 1,538 tons and have a diameter of up to 9.5 meters.

Scheduled to begin offshore construction in 2024, Coastal Virginia Offshore Wind is a 2.6-gigawatt offshore wind energy project that will consist of 176 wind turbines located 27 miles off the coast of Virginia Beach, three offshore substations, undersea cables and new onshore transmission infrastructure to deliver emissions-free wind power to homes and businesses.
