Dachser’s branch in India, Dachser Chennai, was on call for one of its customers to transport a total of four gearboxes weighing 44.5 tons each from Coimbatore to Chennai. However, the door-to-door shipment of the wind turbine components was not without its challenges.

Dachser‘s team handled handled the complete operations of this project shipment, right from cargo pick up using multi-axle hydraulic puller trucks, lashing for cargo safety, movement from Coimbatore to Chennai, customs clearance, loading on MAFI at the port, Ro/Ro vessel planning, till the delivery of the cargo to the customer’s door at destination.

The operation required meticulous planning according to Gayathri Christopher, customer service manager Tamil Nadu. “Handling the initial shipment was very challenging for us, especially the transportation, but our team managed it really well by organising trucks with short lead times and cut offs which helped the shipment move on the planned vessel and reach its destination within the timeline,” she said.

The four gearboxes measured 12 x 12 x 9 feet (3.6 x 3.6 x 2.7 metres), and were categorised as oversized cargo. This required dividing the delivery into three separate shipments: one gearbox was transported in October, another one in November and the rest in December, 2021.
