New commercial venture

Spliethoff and BigLift establish new commercial venture in UK

Spliethoff has opened a new commercial venture called Spliethoff-BigLift UK to expand and develop the commercial representation of Spliethoff and Biglift Shipping in the UK.

The move is not motivated by Brexit a spokesperson for Spliethoff Group says, but by organizational changes in Spliethoff’s former representation in the UK.

Since 2012 Spliethoff and BigLift have been represented in the UK by Shearwater, but now that Shearwater founder Mr. David Beckett has retired from the 31st of March, Spliethoff decided to incorporate its UK representation.

This new incorporation will be managed by Mr. Jon Gliddon of Shearwater Shipping & Chartering Ltd and Mr. Andrew Saunders of Invicta Shipping & Chartering Ltd with the full support of Spliethoff and BigLift Shipping.

“Jon and Andrew have decades of experience in marine transportation particularly for project, heavy lift and breakbulk cargoes”, the Spliethoff Group states.

According to the company, the formation of Spliethoff-BigLift UK comes at an opportune moment to commence a new commercial venture in the UK.

Offshore wind

The British offshore wind industry last month closed a ‘landmark’ Sector Deal with the government which will lead to significant growth in offshore wind capacity from 7.9 gigawatts now to at least 30GW by 2030, generating one-third of the country’s electricity. At the same time exports from the industry are set to increase fivefold in value to £2.6 billion a year by 2030.

Energy and Clean Growth Minister Claire Perry said the Sector Deal is Britain’s “modern Industrial Strategy in action.

The renewable energy market is one of the few well performing offshore markets and its expansion in the UK is set to create more work for project cargo carriers and heavy lift companies. Spliethoff-BigLift UK is based in Croydon, Surrey.
