United Heavy Transport opens doors for business

United Shipping Group has launched a new company called United Heavy Transport. Focusing on the dry tow market, the company operates a fleet of five semisubmersible heavy transport vessels that have been sailing under a partnership agreement between Guangzhou Salvage, GS Pango and United Heavy Lift since 2018.

The new company will operate from United Shipping Group’s headquarters in Hamburg and a new office in Houston which has opened its door per May 1.

The company has hired Anthony Perez to lead the operation in Houston as the Regional Director of the Americas. Perez has extensive experience in the heavy marine transportation industry. He worked at Boskalis for over 11 years, taking on various roles including Fleet Schedule & Portfolio Manager for the Dockwise fleet and business development manager for the Americas.

The operations in Hamburg will be led by Andreas Rolner and a dedicated project team, with Philipp Mehringer being responsible for business development.

The fleet consists of four vessels, with a fifth expected to be delivered in 2021. The Hua Yang Long and Hua Hai Long were both built in 2015 and can carry loads of up to 30,000 tonnes. The 2018-built Hua Xing Long and Hua Sheng Long are slightly smaller and can carry just over 25,000 tonnes.

In 2021, United Heavy Transport expects the delivery of the significantly larger vessel Hua Rui long. This 252-metre long vessel has a similar design to the world-famous Boka Vanguard and will be able to carry loads of up to 82,000 tonnes.

Since the Hua Yang Long, Hua Hai Long, Hua Xing Long and Hua Sheng Long joined United Heavy Lift’s fleet they have carried several projects including deliveries and transfers of drilling rigs, dredging vessels, power barges and offshore supply vessels. Just recently, the Hua Sheng Long moved an 8,000-tonne turret for SBM Offshore.

Next to moving rigs and vessels, the ships can also move onshore LNG or chemical facilities. In cooperation with United Engineering Solutions, the new company will also provide topside float-over installations, and together with United Wind Logistics, offer offshore wind solutions.
