Recently, Trans Global Projects’ unit in China completed the multi-modal delivery of three large 500kV transformers from Chongqing in China to Laem Chabang, Thailand.

The movement faced several operational hurdles right from the beginning. The task involved transporting the three units over 1,700 kilometres by land from the factory to the port of export. To ensure smooth and hassle-free transportation, one of TGP’s teams accompanied the convoy throughout the entire length of the journey.

The team managing the movement at TGP faced the additional challenge of acquiring a Thai Flag Waiver. Since the project was initiated by the Thai government, the cargo could only be transported on a Thai flag vessel or a vessel with a Thai Flag waiver. Obtaining the waiver was a difficult yet necessary option that was successfully achieved by TGP’s team.

After reaching Shanghai, the transformers, each weighing 143 tonnes and measuring roughly six by four by four metres, were loaded onto a non-Thai flag ocean vessel in Shanghai for the voyage to Laem Chabang, where they arrived two days ahead of the delivery deadline.

The transformers themselves are destined for a large transmission system improvement project in the eastern region of Thailand that will enhance system security.
