Roll Group continues Asia expansion with own yard

Roll Group has signed a contract with Bintan Offshore Marine Center (BOMC) to help develop a large offshore centre on the Indonesian island Bintan, where the company will ultimately also create its own operations and maintenance base for the APAC region.

BOMC is a new purpose-built greenfield development in close proximity of Singapore. When fully developed, the yard will cover 100 hectares. It will provide open storages, covered warehouses, workshops, module fabrication yards, a decommissioning yard and client-specific plants. Additionally, it will act as a regional home base for various companies including heavy transport company Roll Group, that owns and operates the shipping companies Rolldock and BigRoll and land-based transport provider Roll-Lift.

The Dutch transport company has become an exclusive partner of BOMC, meaning Roll Group will not only establish its own O&M base at the site but also take care of the cranes and trailers needed for the further development and onsite logistics of the yard. BOMC will offer its customers a range of equipment including SPMT’s, crawler cranes, mobile cranes, forklifts and boom lifts.

APAC expansion

The deal is part of Roll Group’s growth strategy for the Asian Pacific region. The company opened new offices in Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand and Korea last year with the aim to expand both its land-based business and combined land-sea projects in the Asian Pacific region.

At the time, Roll Group specifically stated that it was interested in the fabrication yards in the region and especially those that are being used for the construction of modules for petrochemical and power facilities. Roll Group is positioning itself as a specialist in combined land/sea projects for the transport and installation heavy modules, in which the company takes care of the entire operation.

The partnership in the BOMC yard brings the company closer to achieving that goal. “It helps us with our strategy to expand the land-based business and to focus even more on combined land-sea projects”, comments Robin Koenis, who last year was hired as the managing director of Roll Group’s APAC business. “The yard will have jetty access which is perfect for our company with its land/sea combination. Certainly, because modules will also be built here in the future, and we can handle the transport of these modules with our fleet of adaptable vessels.”

BOMC is 70 percent owned and operated by Qube Holdings, one of the largest port operators and logistics providers in the APAC region, and is expected to be fully operational in the second quarter of 2022.
