During the past week, breakbulk and project cargo industry gathered in Rotterdam for the Breakbulk Europe event, a great opportunity for us as well to see and hear from the people of the industry. We used the opportunity to catch up with Nancy Monbaliu, high & heavy coordinator – Benelux Commercial at UECC.

On a daily basis, Monbaliu is responsible with booking cargo on UECC vessels and keeping close contact with the company’s customers. Due to the occasion, it was only right for us to ask about project cargo on UECC’s RoRo ships, and the answer does not come as a surprise, customers are taking advantage of the frequency of sailings to make sure their cargo gets to the required destination on time.

As Monbaliu says, “the shipping industry has come a long way to become the fastest and most cost-effective way to ship goods.”

The variety is key

Starting in the industry with ICO Terminals, Monbaliu has seen it shift and change. “It is a fascinating job, with a variety of tasks and many international colleagues,” she said. It is the variety that makes every day different, even though the tasks of booking cargo, checking for space on the vessels or offering quotes to customers may seem repetitive, no cargo is the same.

Looking forward, UECC sees this variety as one of its strengths towards reaching a sustainable future for the shipping industry. The company is at the forefront with its newbuild trio of world’s first PCTCs with a battery hybrid solution combined with a multi-fuel engine that is designed initially to run on LNG – presently the most environmentally friendly fuel available – and is also adaptable for low-carbon fuels such as bio-LNG.

Monbaliu called for even more innovation, and new technologies development to ensure a more sustainable future.

And while it was noticeable that there are more and more women in the breakbulk and project cargo industry, Monbaliu said it would be nice to see even more in the shipping business.
