Huanghai Shipyard in China has placed an order with Bergen Engines for the engine scope of four shortsea multipurpose vessels (MPP). According to Bergen Engines, the contract marks a major milestone in the collaboration with its compatriots Skarv Shipping and LMG Marin.

Skarv Shipping, a joint venture between Peak Group and Grieg Edge, placed an order for up to eight of these 7,000 dwt, low-carbon multipurpose vessels towards the end of last year. The vessels have been designed by LMG Marin and are expected to usher in a new era of sustainable maritime transport.

Modularised generator sets

Bergen Engines will supply four Bergen C25:33L6A generator sets, which feature a modularised design that simplifies maintenance for cost-effective operation. Renowned for reliability and performance, the Bergen C25:33L includes variable valve timing that guarantees optimal efficiency and transient performance, even during part-load operation, while maintaining low emissions. Additionally, the generator sets will feature variable speed technology to optimize fuel consumption; valuable for reducing operational costs and lowering emissions.

Jan Øivind Svardal, CEO of Skarv Shipping, said, “These ships are far more climate-friendly than those currently in the coastal market in Europe, with very low fuel consumption. They represent a significant step toward a sustainable future for shipping.”

Looking forward, Bergen Engines will convert these engines to run on Ammonia once the owner makes that decision.

Plenty of deck space

The vessels are well-suited to transport high vertical cargo, as they feature wide decks, heavy-duty hatches, intermediate decks, forward accommodation for enhanced visibility, and increased deck space to protect cargo.

The company eyes transport of medium-sized modules as well as components for the renewable energy industry, including wind turbines.

Contract details include the construction of four multipurpose vessels of 7,000 dwt, with an option for two more. The first ship is scheduled for delivery in the third quarter of 2025, followed by the others at four-month intervals. These vessels are designed to support the renewable energy industry and are highly versatile for various shortsea project cargo transports.
