A new breakwater dam is being built at the port of Genoa, which will allow bigger ships to enter the facility. The new dam will be the deepest in Europe, as Italian construction giant WeBuild, tasked with the project, claimed. Its structure, in fact, will rest on a seabed at 50 metres in depth.

The project is divided into two phases. The first one, expected to be completed by 2026, is a new 300-metre-wide entrance from the east. During the second phase, which should be done by 2030, the Sampierdarena Canal will be enlarged to 400 metres. The new breakwater dam will measure, in total, 6,200 metres in length and will grant access to the Ligurian port to container ships over 400 metres long and 60 metres wide, as WeBuild highlighted.

The base of the structure will be built with 7 million tons of rock material on top of which roughly 100 caissons will be placed. Each cassion will measure up to 33 metres in height, 35 in width, and 67 in length. Most of the material used during the construction, which started last February, comes from the demolition of the old breakwater dam.
