Carbon capture equipment shipped from Belgium to Norway
K2 Project forwarding transported equipment for the Aker Carbon Capture Project from Antwerp, in Belgium, to the town of Brevik, approximately 170 kilometres south of Oslo, in Norway.
The Finnish shipping company Meriaura was also involved in the transport. The equipment was shipped aboard the heavy load carrier vessel Aura, built in 2008, which is sailing under the flag of Finland. Her carrying capacity is 4965 t DWT. Her length overall is of 101.8 metres and her width is of 18.8 metres.
The Aker Carbon Capture Project equipment will be used in Brevik, to capture CO2 from the Heidelberg Norcem production plant, a cement production plant. The Norwegian parliament approved the investment for this full-scale carbon capture facility in December 2020. The carbon capture facility will be up and running from 2024, and HeidelbergCement is aiming to offer carbon-neutral concrete by 2050.
Northern Lights, a partnership between Equinor, Shell and Total, is part of Longship, the Norwegian Government’s full-scale carbon capture and storage project. They will handle the transportation of liquid CO2 to a temporary storage facility in Øygarden, west of Bergen. From there, the CO2 will be brought to permanent storage, below the seabed on Norway’s continental shelf.
